Finding Balance in 2012
Happy New Year! Have you made any resolutions—even informal ones that you haven’t said aloud or called a ‘resolution’?
Maybe you need to lose weight because you’ve exercised too little or eaten too much and just haven’t focused enough time on your health and fitness. Perhaps you want to stop smoking, but feel too stressed out to make this change a priority. You may want to find a more fulfilling job or work less and spend more time with your family. Do you want to travel, read more, learn a new skill, or spend more time with friends?
Whenever you resolve to do something, it’s most likely because you want something to be different – and presumably better – in your life. Making these changes to improve areas of your life is what I consider to be finding balance. Balance isn’t about doing everything or doing everything well – it’s about doing the best you can, fixing what’s not working, and focusing on what is working.
The articles in our Winter 2012 issue (published Feb. 1, 2012) are focused on bringing balance to your life. Organization expert Stacey Crew offers tips for organizing your home so you can feel more relaxed and use time not spent hunting for lost keys/cellphones/paperwork for more productive pursuits. Our Parenting Matters columnist Carol Osborn explains how to make chores a family affair, giving you more time to focus on other less mundane tasks, while also teaching your child important skills. Contributing writer Carol Alexander shares advice on how to work from home when you have children around. You’ll also find articles on using daily routines to help children develop speech and literacy skills, having successful playdates, choosing childcare, and more.
Best wishes for a happy, productive, and balanced year!
